Arnab, the ‘Chai and Why?’ guy, is a scientist working in the area of semiconductor optoelectronics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Crystal Growth and a senior member IEEE. Arnab is passionate about science outreach, and enjoys talking about science and demonstrating science experiments to all audiences, particularly school and college students. He runs ‘Chai and Why?’ a bimonthly science café in Mumbai, received the 2010 Homi Bhabha Award in Science Education, and is presently the chair of Science Popularization and Public Outreach at TIFR.
- Arnab has a B.Tech. degree from IIT-Bombay, a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and worked at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut in Berlin, before setting up a research group in TIFR for novel semiconductor materials and devices.
He is part of the Chair of Science Popularization and Public Outreach – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and an Associate Professor with the same Institute. He has also won various awards and accolades for his contribution towards science.
Arnab enjoys his science and research, but loves taking the excitement of science to the masses, and making it fun, especially for kids. When not working, he enjoys an eclectic mix of activities from music and photography to cooking and marathon running.
